The Assam College Teachers’ Association was founded in 1949 at its inaugural Nowgong College conference. From the time of its inception in 1949 to the year 2022, sixty seven annual conferences were held at different places of Assam. By extending its orbit from Dhuburi to Sadia, covering the entire Barak and Brahmaputra valley, the association has been able to evolve as a strong intellectual platform. As the orbit of the association extended, the platform came to be conveniently subdivided to district wise zones from year 2003-2004 for its smooth functioning.
In its long history, the association owes a lot to the contribution of renowned educationists from Jorhat District. Among whom were Prof. Jatindranath Goswami, Mukul Chaliha, Rohini Kumar Baruah, Dr. Bijoy Ch. Sharma (J.B. College) who have taken responsibility as president and secretary at various times. Their dedicated and selfless service has strengthened the association and has made the Jorhat zone proud. For the years 1956, 1962, 1977, 1985 and 1999, the annual conference of the Association was held in Jorhat.
Before formation of Zonal Committees as per constitution of ACTA, a zonal coordination committee was run in the Jorhat district. Prof Putul Goswami, Dr. Bijoy Ch Sarma, Dr. Ajit Dutta, Dr. Mouchumi Konwar Borgohain, Dr. Goutom kr Bordoloi, Prof. Narendranath Saikia, Dr. Debojyoti Bhuyan, Dr.Gunaram Nath and many more senior teachers took the leadership of zonal coordination committees. Dr. Debojyoti Bhuyan and Dr. Bijoy Ch Sarma were elected as central executive members in the year 1998 and1999 respectively. In 1999, there was a crisis to convene the annual conference of the association. To overcome the crisis, the then executive member of Jorhat zone, Dr. Bijoy Ch Sarma and organizing Secretary Dr. Goutom Kr Bordoloi took the leadership to organize the conference. With the help of all teachers’ units of the Jorhat Zone, the 48th annual conference was successfully held at Bahona College. The process of the formation of zonal committee in Jorhat started from the year 2000. The first two committees were known as zonal coordination committees.
In the year 2000, a meeting was held under the aegis of the coordination committees and Dr Ajit Dutta from J.B. College and Mr. Arup Kumar Mahanta from Jorhat Kendriya Mahavidyalaya were selected as President and Secretary respectively.
In 2002-2004, Dibya Kamal Mazinder was president and Arup Kr Mahanta was secretary of the zonal Committee. In 2003, the 51st annual conference of Gargaon College adopted the amendment of Constitution of ACTA and started the formation of zonal committee under the constitutional provision. In 2004-2005, new zonal committee was formed in the Jorhat Zone with Dr. Panchanan Borthakur as president and Dr. Khirod Saikia as secretary. It was the first zonal committee of Jorhat Zone under the ACTA Constitution.
